WOW! The North East is experiencing a boom period in music at the minute but if I had to single out a band that had everything about them to make it into the mainstream then Bernaccia are the ones that I would make a dash to the bookies for. The band exhibit a wild mixture of psychedelic rock infused with blues and alt rock that ticks all the boxes for hardcore and casual music fans. Its a rare occurrence that you get a band that can appeal to a wide audience like this and Bernaccia are make it seem so easy. [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="250"] Bernaccia[/caption] Recorded at First Avenue Studios with Dave Curle, Bernaccia have built on their excellent first Double A-Side 'No Club/Hideaway'. Whilst that Ep got my attention straight away and had me sending message to all my mates telling them to check this band out from Newcastle, 'Armada' simply left me silent and speechless at how amazing this record is. Before ...

Digits four track EP 'Acquiesce To Violence' is a wonderful showcase of the band as it displays their brilliantly melodic songs as well as capturing the bands excellent changes of tone in that they can be merrily concordial one moment and then switch to heavy rock riffage the next. The title is quite clever in itself being so as it has a literal meaning to read it but also refers to the EP's track listing which begins with the first song 'Acquiesce' and finishes with 'Violence.' Straight to the point in 'Acquiesce', we are greeted with some beastly riffs before the track cools (just a little) into the verse which blasts out some quirky guitars as it jumps into the overly catchy chorus. An extremely energetic track that is well structured and displays the vocalists (Chris Bradley) superb range which poles from nice and melodic to outright screaming. The song outro's with a nice heavy solo just to let us know they aint gonna ...

Fans of upbeat tempo'd ska music, psychedelic sounds and music that's a little bit out there will revel at Spooky Jefferson's Ideal lunchbox and their five track EP House of Dolls. The Washington based six-piece have put a record out that tickles anyone's fancy of idiosyncratic sounds, quirky instrumentals, crazed voice overs and all round fun loving music. Describing themselves as a dark alternative and progressive ska band, Spooky Jefferson's have pretty much nailed their style of music on the head despite it being a bit different and otherwise a bit more out there from the usual music genres you find on the circuit. 'House of Dolls' starts with the atmospheric keys beat  of 'The Lunchbox' before bursting into life after a minute or so as the quirky ska sounds familiar to say Madness come out of your stereo and fill your house full of eccentrically bouncy tunes and trumpets, very upbeat and dance inducing and a bit psych...

Sunderland'd indie-rockers The Montagues released their debut EP 'Silver Linings' this week as the quartet capped off a big week with a launch gig at Frankie and the heartstrings music store Pop Rec's Ltd. The EP  features four tracks of solid indie anthems, capturing the essence of their energy and sound perfectly. Kicking off with the track 'Don't Go', a nice and chilled cool little track with snazzy guitar licks and a lovely drum beat, nice clear vocals and is catchy as hell with its well structured build into the chorus. The melodic 'Masquerade' follows up sending the EP into another gear with some bouncy fast paced action that prompts you to gyrate. 'Rain' is another catchy indie-pop tune that gets your notice and draws you in whereas the final track of the EP 'Ungraceful' hits home with its classic indie anthem groove. A very solid showing from The Montagues and a great introduction of the band that are currently ma...

New Electric Ride have put out some teaser tracks to give fans a feel for their debut LP due for release on Feb 25th. The band from Sunderland who are now based in London have been making people take notice with their 60s inspired psychedelic music and the two tracks (Bring What You Expect To Get/Here Comes The Bloom) are an excellent marker that this 'Balloon Age' will be a quality album. 'Bring What You Expect To Get' is a very quirky tune with a very computerized sounding opening that quickly flowers into a brilliantly pysche-pop track reminiscent of the style put out in the Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles. It has a nice poppy feel to it whilst giving out the spacey vibe that has made the band stand out. Similarly 'Here Comes The Bloom' grooves with the same feel of genre, is very cool and gets you bobbing along with the song, has some lovely percussion's going on and the vocals are alluring. It's a little bit out there a...

Carved Lies are back with album number two in Pareidolia, released just over a year after the bands successful first hit 'Straight Jacket Funhouse'. In that time the band have grown ostensibly with a revered live act which features face-paints, boiler suits and most importantly rocking their music raw and in the flesh. The band have also been featured on a number of radio stations, newspapers and magazines locally and around the world including a feature in Four Culture magazine and have supported acts such as House of Pain and Limp Bizkit's DJ Lethal and playing to over 300 people at the Coscon Comic Convention. Commenting on Pareidolia the bands bassist Dave Jameson (Jambo) said "our music has matured into the way we wanted to sound, giving it a harder and darker edge. The lyrics are about a guy inside of a run down insane asylum who has fantasies and delusions about being in the outside world but his mind cant quite tell...

The Shooting Of has released a new video for his satirical song 1000 Facebook Likes. The song pokes fun of new music industry standards of assessing music by likes, followers and online amateur journalists. The song itself is quite a laid back little melody. Some of the keys work and vocals remind me of parts of Pink Floyd's The Wall - well if they were taking the piss out of Facebook anyway. The video, which you can watch above, is simplistic in its execution but goes very well with the song and helps to create the intended atmosphere. Check it out then of course go and like the Facebook page and make it 1001 likes: https://www.facebook.com/theshootingof

The Panoramic

February 16, 2014

The Panoramic formed two years ago when four lads from Middlesbrough got together influenced from bands such as We Are Scientists, Paolo Nutini, Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend and other catchy indie rock bands. What started as a three piece  soon expanded to four and the band are now on a course that has seen them spark rave reviews as a band to keep an eye out for. [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="230"] The Panoramic[/caption] Made up from James (Guitar), Ross (Drums), Joe (Bass/Vocals) and Steffen (Guitar/Vocals) the band quickly developed from their first gig at Westgarth, Middlebrough playing a set of covers to creating their own upbeat indie pop songs. The band have already released a single back in August entitled 'Blinded By The Lights' accompanied with B-side 'Bleeds On Me' and a music video. Recorded by James Henderson in his home studio the band couldn't speak higher of him commenting "he definitely knows ...

Usurper are an alternative rock group that evolved from the band Mirage back in Septemeber 2013. The band had spent over a year under their former name but with a guitarist change decided to shift things up with a new name and a change of sound. The band consists of members Jack Nicolson (Vocals), Ant Simpson (Guitar), Joe Dore (Drums), James Hedley (Bass) and Johnny Lathbury with its beginnings in April 2012 when Jack and Joe, who knew each other through their parents decided to form the group Mirage. Jack had been in a band with Ant before so he came in and the band took from there releasing their first EP in 'Find Your Feet/Instincts.' Here's our review of the EP: [quote]‘Find Your Feet’ is the debut EP from Newcastle’s Mirage. The two track record features songs ‘Find Your Feet’ and ‘Instincts’, both of which are an excellent blend of funk and alt rock. ‘Find Your Feet’ is a bouncy tune which some quirk...
